Exactech Lawsuit: Knee, Ankle & Hip Implants

Exactech Replacement lawsuits aim to get financial compensation for those who’ve suffered injuries and other complications caused by defective liners and inserts in Exactech knee, ankle and hip replacements.

Exactech, an orthopaedic company, recently issued a recall of around 150,000 implants after it was found that the implants contained a defective plastic insert component that causes them to fail prematurely.

Why Were So Many Exactech Impants Recalled?

The orthopaedic company has been making inserts since 2004, and were packaging them in non-conforming vacuum bags. Although the bags are oxygen resistant, they don’t have a barrier layer of ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH), which is used to bolster the implant’s resistance to oxygen.

As a result, oxygen can seep into the insert, causing oxidation, which wouldn’t happen if the proper precautions were taken.

The added oxygen can cause the implant to rapidly deteriorate, resulting in the following:

  • Accelerated wear debris production
  • Bone loss
  • Disintegration of bone cells (lysis)
  • Pain
  • Loosening
  • Component fatigue cracking/fracture

In many cases, a revision surgery may be necessary.
