Over 190,000 ceiling fans are under a recall after several reports of blades detaching and flying off the fan. According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, a Florida-based company called King of Fans received nearly 50 reports of blades detaching.
The recall is focused on 54-inch Mara ceiling fans, which were sold at Home Depot stores across the nation.
Several of the reports claimed the fan blade detached while in motion and hit someone. A handful of other reports claim the defective fan caused property damage.
According to a statement from the CPSC, not all Mara ceiling fans were included in this recall. The manufacturer, King of Fans, notes that the recall only applies to its Mara ceiling fans with matte black, matte white, black and polished nickel finishes.
The commission says it’s extremely important that if you purchased and installed one of these items, stop using it immediately.
“If consumers observe blade movement or uneven gaps between the blades and fan body or movement of the clip during inspection, consumers should immediately contact King of Fans for a free replacement ceiling fan,” the CPSC stated.
King of Fans claim the defects in its ceiling fans were caused by a manufacturing defect with the fan blade’s locking clip. According to the company, one of the two screws that help lock the fan blade in place may not be adequately secured to the flywheel.
Home Depot said it exclusively sold this model of ceiling; with more than 80,000 fans sold nationwide.
