Mesothelioma is an often fatal disease caused by asbestos exposure. The latency period for this disease ranges anywhere from 10 to 50 years; therefore a diagnosis may not happen until years after the initial exposure.
There are three main types of mesothelioma, with each type named after the part of the body where the cancer is found.
Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of the disease, accounting for 75% of the cases that are diagnosed each year. Pleural mesothelioma forms in the mesothelial lining of the lungs where asbestos fibers become trapped once inhaled, causing abnormal changes in the cells in the lining of the pleura.
Peritoneal mesothelioma is the second most common form, accounting for 20% of the cases that are diagnosed each year. Peritoneal mesothelioma is formed in the abdomen and sometimes referred to as abdomen mesothelioma. Specialists of this disease believe asbestos reach a person’s abdomen when they are trapped by the trachea mucus and eventually swallowed before making their way to the peritoneum.
The rarest form, pericardial mesothelioma is only found in 1% of the cases that are diagnosed each year. This type of cancer is when asbestos fibers are inhaled and get stuck in the lining of the heart. Pericardial mesothelioma is thought to be the most painful type of the disease.
