Depo-Provera is a hormonal birth control shot containing medroxyprogesterone acetate. It is administered as an injection every 12 weeks. Depo-Provera is manufactured by Pfizer, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. Hundreds of thousands of women throughout the United States use Depo-Provera as a form of contraception.
A recent study has shown that women who use of Depo-Provera for over a year are 5x more likely to develop brain tumors and other serious side effects due to the drug’s active ingredient, medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA). Meningioma brain or spine tumors are the most common.
Legal filings against Pfizer and other manufacturers claim that the companies knew or should have been aware that patients faced a heightened risk of developing meningiomas, especially with long-term use of Depo-Provera. Depo-Provera manufacturers failed to warn consumers about these risks.
A meningioma is a type of tumor that forms in the meninges, which are the protective layers of tissue covering the brain and spinal cord. Most meningiomas are noncancerous, but they can still cause serious health issues including headaches, vision problems, seizures, memory issues, weakness in limbs, and balance issues.
Research has suggested a possible link between prolonged use of Depo-Provera and an increased risk of developing meningiomas, as the tumor’s growth may be influenced by hormones like medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), which is a component of Depo-Provera.
You may be eligible to file a Depo-Provera lawsuit if you or a loved one
If you have been diagnosed with a meningioma tumor following at least one year of using Depo-Provera, you may be eligible for compensation.
