The Bronx Fire Attorneys | Safety Doors Failed

On the morning of January 9, 2022, a fire broke out in a Bronx high-rise. The resulting flames and smoke killed 17 people, including eight children, at the Twin Parks North West apartment building.

Investigators said a malfunctioning electric space heater was the apparent cause of the disaster, but what’s more: it appears safety doors were not functioning properly, which aided to the spread of the fire – and just as deadly, the smoke.

Improper Safety Doors Caused Smoke To Spread

New York’s Fire Commissioner said the apartment’s front door and a door on the 15th floor should have been shut. If that were the case, much of the smoke would’ve been contained. But the doors were left open, and heavy smoked carried through the building, blocking some people from escaping, and injuring others and they tried.

Firefighters said many of the children they carried out needed oxygen immediately.

After the flames were put out, 17 people were killed and dozens were injured. Officials reported  32 of the 44 hospitalizations sustained “life-threatening” injuries.

Building A Case

After any fire, we understand the problems you face and the emotions you’re enduring. Whether you lost someone you love in a fire, or have sustained serious injuries as a result of one, know that The Barnes Firm can help provide support in more ways than one.

It’s our job to discover what caused the fire, how it could’ve been prevented, and determine who was liable. Here’s what we know about the fire in The Bronx:

  • A malfunctioning space heater contributed to the fire
  • Open safety doors aided the spread of smoke

A thorough legal investigation will help determine exactly how the space heater malfunctioned, and who may be liable for that malfunction. An investigation will also reveal why safety doors were left open, and potentially, how to stop that from happening again in the future.
